First day of Autumn in 2014 westchester ny
September 23, 2014, marks the first day of autumn, when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and length of night are nearly equal. After the autumnal equinox, days get shorter and nights get longer. The third season of the year was traditionally referred to as the harvest season. The word “autumn” — derived from Latin’s “autumnus” — first appeared in English in the late 14th century. As people moved away from farming, the reference to harvest began to fade. By the 16th century, it was increasingly displaced in favor of “autumn.” One hundred years ago, German armies invaded France and Belgium with such force the troops thought they’d be home before the leaves fell. Instead, the Great War would drag on for another four years, involving 20 countries and four continents. Today, we call it World War I. |
